Daniel Lee "Dan" Grimes, 71, was born on July 13th, 1955, to Daniel Lee and Lila Mae (Thompson) Grimes in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He passed away on October 17th at his home in Yukon, Oklahoma.
Dan graduated from Putnam City West High School in 1974 and attended Oklahoma State University. He went on to work as an over-the-road truck driver, in commercial construction, and as a diesel mechanic. He also worked as a superintendent and heavy equipment operator in commercial construction.
Dan developed a love for fast cars and motorcycles during his teenage years, a passion he carried throughout his life. Through trial and error, he learned how to work on cars and motorcycles, rebuilding them and making them faster. Through this passion, he met many friends who became brothers and sisters in the biker world. Dan loved sharing his knowledge of motorcycle repair and maintenance and often taught others how to work on their own bikes to save money in the future.
Dan was the kind of guy who never met a stranger. He never left a brother behind, even if he didn’t know who they were. He was full of wild stories and unforgettable experiences that he loved sharing with others.
Dan thought highly of his brother-in-law, Tim Calhoun, and credited him with helping shape his personality and wisdom.
Dan met Stephanie Gholston at the Hogwash in the summer of 2008. On July 3rd, he asked her if she would like to take a ride on his motorcycle, and she excitedly agreed. However, he then told her he didn’t have any pegs or a pad, so she would have to ride on the fender. She told him that she didn’t think that would be a problem.
The two went on to marry, on that same bike, at the Hogwash the following year, on July 11th, 2009. The wedding drew a record-high crowd of 222 people, including family, friends, and 110 motorcycles. Some even bet that the marriage wouldn’t last very long. But on July 11th, 2026, Dan and Stephanie celebrated 17 years of marriage. Everyone came to know them as “Dan and Steph.”
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Cloetta Calhoun and Floetta Lane; his brother-in-law, Tim Calhoun; and his nephews, Tim Kirk and Jeff Calhoun.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, of the home; his children, Stacie Shelton of Quanah, Texas; Scott Gholston and wife Lydia; and Sandi Gholston, both of Yukon, Oklahoma; and his sister, Delores Vette of Kansas City, Kansas.
He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Meredith Gholston, Aeris and Dexter Shelton, Audrie and Henry Gholston, and Talon and Taygan Hopkins; his mother-in-law, Luann Elmore, and her husband, Lyle; and his father-in-law, Jerry Wright.
He is also survived by his nephews, Kirk Calhoun and wife Olivia, and Dean Vette and wife Leigh Eury; his nieces, Kim Lane and husband Les McGehee, and Laura Lane; his sisters-in-law, Angela Mobley (Lonnie) and Jennifer Jones of Vernon, Texas; and many other nieces and nephews.
Dan will be remembered for his love of motorcycles, his willingness to help others, his wild stories, and the friendships and family bonds he built throughout his life. His presence, personality, and love for those around him will be deeply missed.
