Elvia Gilda Zayas

Elvia Gilda Medina Martinez Zayas was born on January 11, 1940 near Tampico, Mexico to Jose and Rufina Medina. She died on September 24, 2023 in the presence of her family.

She grew up in Mexico before moving to Chicago, Illinois at the age of 16 along with her dear sisters Lou, Maria, and her honorary sister Manola. This is where she met and married her husband Alberto Zayas. They raised their three boys, Tito, Joe, and Sergio in Illinois until 1982 when they moved to Yukon, Oklahoma.  They were active members of the First Baptist Church in Yukon, where Elvia had the privilege of teaching young people along with her dear friend Barb. Helping with Missions Friends was one of the great joys of her life along with her six grandchildren.  Elvia had a love for all children.  She was always collecting songs, supplies and typing verses to share with them.  She had a personal relationship with God that she delighted in sharing with the children of the church.  She was also particularly skilled with sewing and enjoyed gardening and doing crafts.

Elvia is preceded in death by her husband Alberto Zayas, and her parents Jose and Rufina Medina.

Elvia is survived by her children, Alberto (Donna) Zayas of Winston-Salem, NC, Jose Zayas of High Point, NC, and Sergio (Angela) Zayas of Edmond, Oklahoma as well as her six grandchildren: Nicholas, Emmanuel, Ava, Isabella, Sophie, and Emilia.

Visitation will be held at Yanda and Son Funeral Home on Thursday, September 28, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.. Family will be present to greet guests. Services will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023 at the First Baptist Church in Yukon, Ok, at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Yukon Cemetery.
