Gary Wayne Mckenzie

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary Wayne McKenzie of Yukon, Oklahoma, on January 3, 2025, at 9:01 PM. His absence leaves a profound void that will be forever and deeply felt by all who knew him.

Gary was born on February 1, 1943, to Roy L. and Ruby L. McKenzie in St. John, Kansas. He was one of eight siblings and grew up surrounded by the love of his family. Gary was a cherished brother, and an incredibly beloved father, grandfather, and newly proud great-grandfather.

Words can hardly capture the depth of Gary's magnanimous heart, nor the boundless love he held for his family and friends. His love was unconditional, infinite, and unwavering. Anyone fortunate enough to know him would agree—he was the very embodiment of the qualities that legends are made of. To those who met him, Gary was immediately recognized as a remarkable man, defined by a proud, golden heart and the spirit of a Marine. He lived to love, protect, and serve his country, leaving behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and devotion. To others who knew him throughout his life, he was so much more than just a man—he was an incredibly devoted daddy, a real-life Ironman superhero, a trusted brother and friend, a problem-solver, and a master of all trades. He never backed down from a challenge and was always defiant in the face of the impossible. In all but this one time, he was successful. But, perhaps his most cherished titles were those of Gramps and Poppy. He was a true gift to everyone lucky enough to know him.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Rashelle McKenzie, and son-in-law, Justin McKenzie, who proudly carries his name. His legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Chris Jett, Ian Jett, Alec and her husband Jacob Yerton, Orion McKenzie, and Saturn McKenzie; as well as his great-grandson, Henry Yerton. He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters, Barbara and Ann. His love, strength, and memory will continue to live on in all of them.

He now joins his wife, Sherri (Sigler) McKenzie, who passed in 2008. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Jim and Doug McKenzie, and his sisters, Lee Tabor, Jayne Morrell, and Sharon McKenzie.

There is so much more to be said about his incredible legacy, yet no words or pages could ever fully capture the impact he made. To honor his life, services will be held on January 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Discovery Church in Yukon, with interment to follow at Yukon Cemetery. A viewing will be held on January 16 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Yanda & Son Funeral Home in Yukon, Oklahoma.
