Jerry "Carlton" Grimes

Jerry Carlton Grimes was born January 27, 1949. He passed away on March 30, 2026, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, after a lengthy illness. 

He is survived by his wife, Rebekah Hickerson Grimes, and son, Branson Joshua Grimes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Pauline Grimes.

Carlton lived his entire life in the Altus area. He graduated from Southside High School and Southwestern State College in Weatherford. He started his career at South Western Oklahoma Development Authority which led to a 30-year career in law enforcement, including time with the Olustee Sheriff’s Department, Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite, Undersheriff for Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, and Altus Police Department as an officer and detective.

Carlton was a Mason and member of First Presbyterian Church of Altus. He was a lifelong student of history and lover of his pets Chloe and Gray-Gray. Carlton was extremely proud of his multigenerational farm when it was designated as a “Centennial Farm.” Carlton was a true gem, one of a kind, a gentleman and a scholar.

A memorial will be held Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 208 E. Cypress, Altus, Oklahoma, with a private burial in Hess Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Altus, Oklahoma.
