Lawrence Oliver Mitchell

Lawrence Oliver Mitchell Sr., a proud veteran of the Air Force, Navy, Army, and Army National Guard, passed away on Tuesday April 2nd, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones.

The son of John William Mitchell and Louise Freda Summerfield, he was born on November 5th, 1945 in Hansford, West Virginia.  He grew up in Hansford, followed by Pratt, West Virginia and then Grants, New Mexico where he graduated from high school.

At the age of 18, Larry enlisted in the service where he served in  various roles, but his favorite and most-valued assignment was as a combat photographer in Vietnam where he received the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and twelve  siblings.  Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; his son, Lawrence Jr.; his daughter Christa and her husband, Brian Cook; his granddaughters Jessica and her husband, Tanner Wisham, Haley, and her husband, Zach Nicely, and Julia, and her husband, Jesse Montez.   He is also survived by his bonus grandkids, Sam Cook, Hayden Cook, Sam Roach and Catherine Roach, and his great-grandson, Draco Montez as well as many treasured nieces and nephews , a sister-in-law, Nancy Sparks, and brother-in-law, Frank Rosecrans.

A service honoring the life of Larry will be held on Monday, April 8th  at 2:00pm at Yanda and Son Funeral Home in Yukon, Oklahoma, followed by a graveside service on Tuesday, April 9th at 2:00pm at Ft. Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma with full military honors.

The family would like you to know that the Patriot Guard will be escorting Larry on Tuesday to Fort Sill National Cemetery. The procession will leave Yanda and Son at 11:45am and all are welcome to participate.
