Margaret Nichols

Former Elk City resident, Margaret Nichols, passed away in her sleep Thursday January 16, 2025, at the age of 97 at St. Katherine Drexel Assisted Living in El Reno, Oklahoma.

Margaret was born in Leedey, Oklahoma on April 22, 1927.

In 1955, Margaret married her husband Bert Nichols in Elk City, OK. Margaret and Bert went on to have five children: Teresa, David, Cathy, Rita, and Monica.

While living in Elk City, Margaret was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church.  She dedicated much of her time volunteering at the St. Matthew's food bank, working in the flowerbeds at St. Matthew's, and delivering Holy Communion. She also delivered for Meals on Wheels and, for over 30 years, was a volunteer at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City.  In 2017, at the age of 90, Margaret moved to Yukon to be closer to her family, where she lived until February of 2024 when she moved to St. Katherine Drexel. She became a member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Yukon, OK.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Bert, one daughter Monica Nichols, her parents, two sisters, and six brothers.  She is survived by 4 children: Teresa Mills of Shawnee, OK, David Nichols of Denton, TX, Cathy Gardner and husband Greg of Tuttle, OK, and Rita Wally and husband John of Yukon, OK; 7 grandchildren and spouses; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret will be held at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Yukon, Wednesday January 22 at 10:00 am, followed by burial service Wednesday afternoon at Calvary Cemetery in Elk City at 2:30 pm.  The family would like to thank the staff at St. Katherine Drexel for their care of Margaret during her time there, and Legacy Hospice.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Matthew's food bank or the Society of St. Vincent De Paul USA at ssvpusa.org.
