Maxine Christine Campbell

In the early hours of February 18, 2025, after a battle with the affects of Alzheimer's Disease, Maxine Campbell passed away, having reaching the age of 89 nine days earlier.

Maxine was born February 9, 1936 to parents Linus and Elsie (Vaughn) Hamren in Portland, Oregon. In June of 1939, Maxine became a big sister to Linda.  Maxine attended Peninsula Elementary School and Roosevelt High School.  She graduated in 1954.

Over Labor Day weekend 1954, Maxine met Patrick J Campbell, a young soldier home of leave, at the St Johns theater.  Family lore has it that young Patrick shook Maxine up so badly that she dumped her cash box!  As we got older we heard variations of their first meeting.

They married April 16, 1955 at Assumption Catholic Church in St Johns, a north Portland neighborhood.  After a honeymoon in Seaside, OR, a place they returned to over the years, the embarked on their first adventure as a military couple to Fairbanks, Alaska where Pat was assigned to Ladd Air Force Base.   In June 1956, Pat was assigned to Fort Lewis, WA where they would reside until 1963, and welcome four of their five children.  Their fifth child was born in Portland, OR.

In the fall of 1963, Pat deployed for the first of two tours in Vietnam. After returning from Maxine became well equipped at handling the constant moving every few years and for where the Army assigned Pat.  Over time, we kids figured out that if we came home from school and the curtains were no longer in the windows, we would be moving soon. Dad would come home with orders and Mom would remove the curtains first.  In addition to Washington and  Alaska, Pat received orders and Maxine put up and took down curtains at Fort Devens, MA Fort Ord, CA, Fort Kobbe in the Panama Canal Zone, West Point, NY, Ft Carson, CO,  Frankfurt, Germany, Ansbach, Germany and then finally back to Ft Lewis, WA.  At all of these locations, Maxine spent time volunteering for various Army Wives activities.  After Pat retired from the Army in September 1983, Maxine became involved in her parish, The Church of the Visitation and at the school connected to the parish, doing fund raising with Pat and as a teacher's aide helping the children with reading skills.  She also worked in the Rectory office part time.

In retirement, Maxine continued to travel with Pat to military reunions of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, back to Seaside for rest and relaxation and frequent visits to see their children and grandchildren who were scattered from Alaska to Oklahoma, from Washington to California and New Mexico.

After Pat passed away in February 2015, Maxine eventually moved to Oklahoma to live with her daughter Anne Marie Money and her family, who cared for her until her passing.

Maxine was predeceased by her parents, husband Patrick, sister Linda Johnson and son Stephen.

She is survived by her daughters, Julie (Chris) Dowling, Anne Marie (Danny) Money and sons Myron (Donene) Campbell, and  James Campbell. She is also survived by grandchildren Zachary (Rebecca) West, Charity (Daniel) Thomas, Patrick Money, Melody (Chris) Crase, Lynsey (Dan) Kirwin, Corey Campbell, and George Dowling and 14 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, her brother-in-law Leland Johnson, sisters- in- laws Margaret Pemberton, Janet Bukovi, and Anne (Steve) Van Dyke.

A Mass of Memorial will be held at 9:00 am, Saturday August 2, 2025 (Rosary at 8:30 am) at Visitation of Pope Saint John Paul XXIII, formerly the Church of the Visitation at 3314 South 58th Street, Tacoma. Washington.

Maxine converted to Catholicism after her marriage to Pat in 1955. It was her deep faith that carried her through the trials and tribulations of military life and raising five children "on the road." She had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.

We would like to thank the parish of Saint John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Yukon, Oklahoma and to Father John Metzinger and Deacon John Teague, for ministering to our Mother in the time leading up to her passing.

Thank you, Mom for all you did to keep your "Tribe" together all these years.  From Alaska to Panama and all points in between you kept us moving in as orderly a fashion as possible…5 kids?  That is no small feat.

You will be loved and missed forever.
