Sandra "Sandy" Jean Damron

Sandra Jean "Sandy" (Roper, Pelky, Thonton) Damron, 72, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, February 25, 2024. Sandy was born October 1, 1951, to Marcus Joseph and Wynemio Effiejean Pelky in Hobbs, NM. Her childhood was spent in various locations such as Hobbs, NM, Glendale, and Phoenix, AZ, and Indio and Riverside, CA, with her daddy, mom, and three sisters.

Sandy moved to Wichita Falls, TX, after graduating from John W. North High School in Riverside, CA in 1969. She met and eventually married R.C. Thonton in Wichita Falls. They were blessed with two wonderful children, R.C. II and Farrah Dixie. They moved to Yukon where Sandy was employed as a Walmart department manager and R.C. at the Federal Prison System in El Reno. R.C. preceded Sandy in death in 1984.

She and her young son, R.C. II, accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior at the Vandament Avenue Baptist Church in Yukon. She said she felt as if her life began anew at that time.

Sandy met and later agreed to marry Tom Damron after his proposal in the church parking lot. The couple married on June 5, 1986 at the First Baptist Church in Yukon where they attended for several years. They lived a happy and blessed life for 38 years in Yukon, watching their three children grow and flourish.  Sandy gladly accepted Tom's daughter, Gina as her own and managed to spoil her equally as much as she did R.C. II and Farrah. While attending First Baptist Church, she assisted with cooking and meal prep for various outreach ministries and always enjoyed helping others. She was a great cook and enjoyed making special meals for anyone she thought might be hungry. The kids and all of their friends especially enjoyed her chocolate gravy and biscuits. She also assisted one of her many friends in cooking lunches for the State Fair Board during several of the Oklahoma State Fairs. At other times, Tom would occasionally go home for lunch on Fridays, and she would be feeding the Yukon High School Football Team a special lunch that she had prepared.

In addition to Walmart department manager, Sandy also worked at various other jobs including sales secretary, manager of Suzie's Clothing Store, and ultimately attended school and became a manicurist/nail technician.

Sandy loved to work in the garden and kept the yard looking beautiful while somehow finding time to do the housework and raise the kids. She planted trees and did all the landscaping at the house.

She encountered some serious health issues in 2010 which did not change her love of family or friends but did affect her ability to cook for others, work in the yard and house, and do so many things that she loved. The yard, house, and all suffered greatly with Tom trying to fill her shoes.

Sandy (Nana to her grandchildren) was a very special lady. She was always thinking of others and trying to provide the things she thought they may need or want. She somehow managed to spoil each of her children, grandchildren, and even her husband and made each one feel special. She will be sorely missed!

Sandy was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Carlton Thonton Sr., son, Raymond Carolton Thonton II, father, Marcus J. Pelky, and mother, Wynemio Boyd, daddy, Delton Roper, and granny, Vivian Mast.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Damron of the home; daughter, Farrah D. Schmidt, and husband Dustin, and their two sons, Kaden and Kason; daughter, Gina Cardines, and husband Richard, and their children Inara and Kholton; grandsons, Carlton and Christian Thonton; sisters, Dianna Creed and husband Ray, Margaret Dooley and husband Richard and Mary Roper, as well we numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family and friends.

Viewing will be held 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 29, 2024, with funeral services to be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, at the Yanda & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Yukon. Interment will follow at the Yukon Cemetery, Yukon, OK.
