William Lynn Mathes

Retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel William L Mathes was born August 17th, 1937 in Hamlin, TX to William January Mathes and Ellen Autry Mathes (Ray). He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024 in Norman, OK at the age of 87.

William moved to Wink, TX, when he was 1 month old, where the family lived until his father transferred to Crane, TX for Shell Oil. He resided in Crane until he graduated from Crane High School in 1955.

William chose a career in the US Army as an officer and combat engineer and served 24 working his way up to LTC.  He was proud to be in the military. With dedication, honor and pride for his county, he served 3 tours in Vietnam.

He resided in Edmond, OK from his retirement until 2008 when he moved to Yukon, OK.  He was a kind loving wonderful brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Williams was preceded in death by his father William January Mathes and mother Ellen Autry Mathes (Ray). He is survived by his beloved sister Jacqueline Campbell, of Granbury, TX; daughter Jennifer L Jackson (Mathes) and son-in-law Derreck Jackson, of Yukon, OK; grandchildren Ashley Jackson, of Yukon, OK and Dawson Jackson and wife Cheyenne of Yukon, OK, as well and lot of amazing great grandchildren.

The Interment of ashes will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in Houston, TX with full military honors. (Date to be determined later.) There will not be a memorial service, but there will be a celebration of life at a later day.

The family would like to thank the Norman's Veteran's Home for their dedicated care for him in his last years.
